MEET HENRY WINKLER
by Ann Stalcup

What did you most like to do when you were a child?

I liked to water ski. I liked archery. I loved going to the theater and I spent most of my          childhood dreaming about being on the stage in the theater

Did you write stories when you were growing up? at school? Or at home as a hobby? As a young child, or as a teenager, or both?

Writing, reading and arithmetic were unbelievable difficult for me. It wasn’t until 2003 that I got up the courage to try and write.

What kinds of things inspire you to write?

I am inspired when I get letters from young people telling me they laughed very hard reading HANK ZIPZER.

What gave you the idea for HANK ZIPZER?

With HANK ZIPZER, I am merely telling the story of my trials and tribulations going to school. I am lucky enough to have an unbelievably funny partner named Lin Oliver.

When you do school visits, what question do children ask you most?

“How did you write these books if school was so hard for you?” And I tell them, “You all have greatness in you. Your dreams are possible”.

What do you most want the students to get out of your school visits?

I want them to laugh. I want them to feel good about themselves and I want them to understand that children who learn differently are not to be treated differently.

Is there anything about yourself that you’d like to share - hobbies, where you were born, special talents other than writing/illustrating, what other jobs you had before you became a writer/illustrator?

One of my favorite jobs is also a dream I had since I was 7, and that is being an actor.

When is your next book going to be in book stores?

The very last HANK ZIPZER book will be in a bookstore near you on APRIL 20TH, 2010!!   What a fabulous day.
